In the early morning of February 6, 2023, a devastating earthquake with a 7.8 struck near the
Turkey-Syria border, with its epicenter in Kahramanmaras, southeastern Turkey.
Buildings collapsed as people slept, trapping thousands under rubble or outside in the frigid winter temperatures. It caused 53,000 deaths.
As people fled the earthquake, some companion animals were left behind in crumbling and
condemned buildings.
Local and international rescue organizations were active in the hardest-hit areas rescuing animals, reuniting them with their families, and providing medical care.
The project aimed to document animal rescue efforts by humans in Hatay, where is the city most affected by the earthquake, and also the human-animal relationship in the post-earthquake crisis.
